Shelter Movie Collection: Jason Statham’s ‘Shelter’ Falls Short at Box Office in Opening Weekend

Shelter Movie Collection: The action thriller, which hit theaters on January 30, 2026, struggled to make an impact despite receiving favorable reviews from audiences.

Director Ric Roman Waugh’s film found itself overshadowed by competing releases and challenging circumstances.

In North America, “Shelter” managed to earn approximately $5.5 million, while international markets contributed around $7.5 million to the total.

The film placed fifth or sixth on domestic charts, trailing behind established blockbusters including Zootopia 2 and Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Historic Low for Statham

This opening represents Statham’s poorest wide-release performance in nearly two decades. The last time the British action star experienced such modest numbers was with his 2008 fantasy film “In the Name of the King.”

The film’s performance in India was particularly weak, generating only ₹0.23 to ₹0.25 crore during its first two days of release.

Financial Concerns

With a production budget of $50 million, industry analysts estimate “Shelter” needs to gross approximately $125 million globally to reach profitability. Current projections suggest this target remains out of reach.

Contributing Factors

Several elements worked against the film’s success. Horror movie “Send Help” dominated the weekend with $20 million, while YouTube-backed “Iron Lung” surprised everyone with $17.8 million.

Additionally, severe winter weather across multiple US regions significantly reduced theater attendance during the crucial opening period.

The film’s future depends on strong word-of-mouth and international performance in upcoming weeks.
