Riyas Marath’s directorial debut, Anomie: The Equation of Death, released on February 6, 2026, is a film that dares to be different. Blending forensic investigation with psychological depth and a sci-fi twist, it’s clear the filmmaker has bigger ambitions than your average thriller. The question is: does it deliver?
The story centers on Zara Philip, played brilliantly by Bhavana Menon in her much-awaited return to Malayalam cinema. She’s a forensic expert whose world crumbles when her schizophrenic brother Ziyaan vanishes. Refusing to sit idle, Zara launches her own investigation, crossing paths with Inspector Jibran (Rahman), a cop haunted by his past mistakes. Together, they unravel a chilling mystery that questions morality, control, and the human mind.
Bhavana is the heart and soul of this film. Her portrayal of Zara—fragile yet fierce—anchors every frame. Rahman does a commendable job too, though his character arc feels somewhat rushed. Shebin Benson deserves praise for handling Ziyaan’s mental illness with sensitivity and respect, avoiding tired stereotypes.
Visually, Anomie is stunning. Cinematographer Sujith Sarang’s moody blues and clinical yellows create an atmosphere thick with tension. Harshavardhan Rameshwar’s score pulses with intensity, though it occasionally drowns out quieter moments.
The film’s Achilles’ heel? Its 152-minute runtime. The second half drags, and the promised sci-fi “Equation of Death” arrives too late to fully land. Critics have been lukewarm, awarding it 2.5/5 stars, but audiences are far more forgiving, praising the climax and production quality.
Anomie is imperfect but intriguing—a film with heart, ambition, and style. Worth a watch.
