The controversial film about America’s First Lady exceeded expectations in its opening weekend, earning $7 million despite harsh reviews from critics.
Melania Trump Documentary Box Office Performance: A new documentary centered on First Lady Melania Trump has made an unexpected splash at movie theaters across America, bringing in $7 million during its first weekend in cinemas.
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the figures on Sunday, revealing that “Melania” performed far better than industry predictions, which had estimated earnings between $3 million and $5 million.
What the Film Shows
The documentary takes viewers behind the scenes during the 20-day period before President Donald Trump’s second inauguration ceremony in January 2025.
The film presents events from Melania Trump’s point of view, offering a personal glimpse into life at the highest levels of American politics.
Brett Ratner directed the project. Ratner has largely stayed away from Hollywood since 2017, when he faced and denied allegations of sexual harassment.
Mixed Reactions
The film received vastly different responses from professional critics and regular moviegoers. On the review website Rotten Tomatoes, only 11% of critics gave positive reviews.
However, audience members loved it—99% of viewers rated it positively, and the film earned an A grade in CinemaScore surveys.
Kevin Wilson from Amazon MGM Studios expressed satisfaction with the results, stating the company feels “very encouraged by the strong start and positive audience response.”
A High-Profile Launch
Unlike typical documentaries, “Melania” received a glamorous introduction to the public. The First Lady herself hosted a special screening at the White House last week. Days later, she attended the official premiere at the Trump Kennedy Center in Washington alongside celebrity guests including rapper Nicki Minaj, television personality Dr. Phil, and cabinet officials Pete Hegseth and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Financial Outlook
Despite the promising start, the documentary faces a challenging path to profitability. Amazon MGM Studios purchased distribution rights for $40 million and invested another $35 million in promotional campaigns.
The film will eventually become available for streaming on Prime Video later this year.
