Primate Box office collection: Johannes Roberts’ survival horror film Primate is proving to be an early surprise hit of 2026, raking in $25.4 million worldwide since its January 9 release.
The Paramount Pictures thriller, which centers on a rabies-infected pet chimpanzee named Ben who turns on his family, has claimed the second spot among 2026’s highest-grossing films so far.
Primate Box office collection
Primate opened with $11.3 million domestically across 2,964 theaters and has since accumulated $21.8 million in North America. International markets have contributed an additional $3.6 million, with India receiving the film on January 23.
The film outperformed last year’s Wolf Man ($10.8M opening) but fell short of 2023’s breakout horror hit M3GAN, which debuted with $30.4 million.
Currently, only 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($31.7M) stands ahead of Primate in the 2026 box office rankings, with disaster sequel Greenland 2: Migration trailing at $20.7 million.
Financial Outlook
Industry analysts estimate Primate needs to reach approximately $52.5 million globally to achieve profitability after accounting for its $21-24 million production budget, marketing expenses, and theatrical distribution costs.
Critical and Audience Response
The film has earned strong reviews, holding a 79% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences awarded it a B- CinemaScore, with particular praise for Troy Kotsur’s performance and the practical effects used to bring the chimpanzee threat to life.
Primate’s success demonstrates continued audience appetite for creature-feature horror, even during the traditionally slow January release window.
