Thalapathy Vijay Jana Nayagan: Tamil cinema fans were eagerly awaiting Thalapathy Vijay’s much-hyped political thriller Jan Naayakan, slated for a grand release on January 9, 2026, during the festive Pongal season.
But just days before its premiere, the film has run into a major hurdle — the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has yet to grant clearance, forcing the producers to knock on the doors of the Madras High Court.
Court Battle Over Certification
During Wednesday’s hearing, Justice P.T. Asha reserved her order, leaving uncertainty over when the verdict will be announced. The case took a dramatic turn when it was revealed that the complaint against the film came from none other than a member of CBFC’s examining committee.
Interestingly, the individual had raised no objections during the official screening but later filed a separate complaint.
Producers vs CBFC
KVN Productions, represented by their counsel, argued that the delay was arbitrary and that they were not even served a notice for review.
On the other side, Additional Solicitor General A.R.L. Sundaresan submitted the complaint copy and defended CBFC Chairperson’s decision to halt certification, stating that the Chairperson holds the authority to review films even after committee approval.
Why Jan Naayakan Matters
Directed by H. Vinoth, the film stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol in a gripping political action thriller. It carries added significance as it is widely believed to be Vijay’s last film before he fully transitions into politics.
While the UK has already cleared the movie for release, the delay in India has cast a shadow over its much-anticipated debut.

Stakes Are High
With advance bookings paused across several locations, producers fear losses running into crores if the release is stalled. Fans, meanwhile, are anxiously waiting for the court’s decision, which will determine whether Vijay’s swansong hits theaters on Pongal as planned.
