Dirty Dancing Returns: Jennifer Grey Set to Reprise Iconic Role in Long-Awaited Sequel

Dirty Dancing Returns:  Nearly four decades after the beloved romance first captivated audiences, the classic film is getting a sequel with its original star

The iconic 1987 film “Dirty Dancing” is making a comeback. Jennifer Grey will return as Frances “Baby” Houseman in a new sequel, Lionsgate confirmed on January 27.

Production Begins This Year

Filming for the highly anticipated sequel will commence in 2026, bringing fans back to the world of Kellerman’s resort. The project has been in development since 2020, when it was first announced.

Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, expressed enthusiasm about the project.

He emphasized that the new film aims to bring the magic and emotion of “Dirty Dancing” to both longtime fans and newcomers on the big screen.

What Makes the Original Special

The original film’s enduring popularity stems from its authentic storytelling. In 2020, Grey explained to PEOPLE that the movie resonated because of its genuine, straightforward approach.

She described it as a story about losing innocence and personal transformation.

Behind the Scenes

Kim Rosenstock, known for creating “Dying for Sex,” will write the screenplay. The production team includes Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, who previously worked on “The Hunger Games” and “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Jacobson praised the original film’s timeless emotional impact, calling it as powerful today as when it first premiered. She described working on the sequel as a genuine privilege.

While specific plot points haven’t been revealed, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer previously described the sequel as a romantic, nostalgic film that honors the franchise’s legacy.

Grey shared her personal connection to the role, noting she has long wondered about Baby’s life years later. She expressed confidence in the assembled creative team.

Honoring the Past

Patrick Swayze, Grey’s co-star from the original film, passed away in 2009. Grey acknowledged that no one can replace those who have passed, emphasizing the sequel will pursue something different rather than attempting to recreate the original’s magic.
